Not another word was spoken, the drive to the station stiff with silence. I didn’t know what to do with Jane Finley. Any further questioning would get us nothing. She knew how to manipulate her answers in a way that would cause us to waste valuable time.

By the time we’d reached the station, it had begun to empty. As the wall clock passed the five o’clock hour, the station played a medley of laptop bags being packed, the swishing of autumn jackets, zippers in motion, chair wheels crawling, and a steady banter filled with goodbyes and see ya tomorrow. If not for Jane Finley, my feet would be moving to join the exodus, but as it was, my evening hours would be filled with paperwork to secure her custody. Wherever Shawna Jackson was this evening, I hoped she was safe. I only needed to look into her mother’s face to know that she was.
